JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nov. 10, 2020 – Decorated U.S. Army veteran and certified yoga instructor Dan Nevins is used to sharing his story with groups around the world, but this past Saturday was a first for him: he logged on to Hanger Clinic’s virtual EmpowerFest event, which reached more than 400 attendees with limb loss and limb difference, and taught an adaptive yoga and meditation class. Clips from his virtual participation, including a live Q&A with attendee and fellow Hanger Clinic patient Cameron Clapp, were featured in an NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt “Those Who Serve” segment that aired last night.

Having lost both his legs below the knee in combat in Iraq in 2004, Nevins knows what it’s like to endure wounds both physical and emotional. At a particularly low point in 2014, he took his first yoga class, which sparked a breakthrough that changed his life for the better. Now a Tier 3 Certified Baptiste Yoga teacher, Nevins believes in the power of yoga and meditation to help people find healing and purpose. His message was uniquely relevant to the EmpowerFest attendees, who also have physical challenges and differences that have impacted their lives.

Nevins has been helped on his journey not only by his own determination and hard work, but by his Hanger Clinic prosthetist of 12 years, Geoff Hemmen, who Nevins sees in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Compassionate care and custom-designed prosthetic devices from Hemmen have enabled Nevins to be independent and reach his goals, and in turn, help others.
