San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 7, 2017 – CNN has recognized Mona Patel as one of its top 10 2017 CNN Heroes, for her dedication to serving others with limb loss and limb difference. As the founder of the San Antonio Amputee Foundation and a Hanger Clinic licensed clinical social worker, Patel reaches people with limb loss or limb difference at all stages of their journey, including helping newer amputees adjust to life after limb loss.
Not only is Patel dedicated and compassionate, but she understands the effects of limb loss personally, having had her own right leg amputated below-the-knee after a drunk driver struck and severely injured her when she was only 17 years old. A strong leader, Patel’s passion for supporting the limb loss and limb difference community has taken her all the way from San Antonio to Tanzania, where she led a group of amputee climbers to summit Kilimanjaro in 2016.
