SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – June 30, 2021 – This month, 35-year-old Cameron Clapp completed a life-long dream by graduating summa cum laude from California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) with a bachelor’s in sociology, one step closer to his goal of becoming a licensed counselor for others with limb loss or limb difference. Clapp grew up in San Luis Obispo and always wanted to attend Cal Poly—a dream that seemed like it might be out of reach after he was hit by a train when he was just 15, resulting in the loss of his legs above the knee and right arm at the shoulder.

Since then, Clapp has regained his independence using prosthetic limbs custom-fit by several Hanger Clinic prosthetists, from VP of Prosthetics Kevin Carroll, to Upper Limb Specialist James Caywood, and San Luis Obispo-based prosthetist Matt Robinson. For more than 15 years, Clapp has traveled the country mentoring others with limb loss and spreading his message that life is about overcoming obstacles and never giving up. He also currently serves the limb loss and limb difference community through his role as a Community Care Coordinator for Hanger Clinic.

On June 13, Clapp walked across the stage on two microprocessor-controlled prosthetic legs to accept his diploma, with more than a dozen supporters present, including his parents and step-parents. Local and national media shared Cameron’s incredible achievement, and you can watch a USA Today video story here: Triple amputee slays on waves and on the slopes. Photos and videos from the graduation are available upon request for any journalists interested in covering Clapp’s amazing achievement.
