TUCSON, Ariz. – May 10, 2021 – In celebration of Mother’s Day, ABC World News Tonight and ABC News Live featured the extraordinary story of mom of three and Hanger Clinic patient Norma Trujillo. Four years ago, Trujillo was hit by a vehicle while acting as a Good Samaritan, resulting in the loss of both legs above-the-knee and a severed spinal cord.
Since then, Trujillo has fought against all odds to walk and care independently for her children again, determined to prove that whatever life throws at you, you can rise to the challenge. Trujillo has done just that, working hard for years to achieve her goal of walking on full-length prosthetic legs full-time. From driving her kids to soccer practice to participating in adaptive sporting events, Trujillo is truly a “Super-Mom” on a mission to show her family (and the world) that anything is possible.
Some critical moments in Trujillo’s journey include attending several Hanger Clinic EmpowerFest and Bilateral Above-Knee Amputee (BAKA) Bootcamp events since her accident in 2017, where she was surrounded by peers in the limb loss community and experts who were committed to helping her achieve her goals. To continue reaching milestones, Trujillo has relied on hard work, determination, encouragement from her family and community, and care from her Hanger Clinic team in Tucson, including Sarah Don, CPO, who has been Trujillo’s prosthetist—and an important part of her support network—since the beginning of her journey to walk again with prosthetics.
