New York City, Oct. 25, 2019 – This morning, NBC’s 3rd Hour of TODAY featured a live in-studio appearance from Grand Rapids, Michigan-based couple Kevin and Julie Breen, who both truly know the meaning of “for better or worse.”

For the Breens, life took a turn around Christmas 2016, when father of three Kevin came down with a case of strep throat that spread to his stomach, turning septic, and nearly killing him. Doctors saved his life, but at a price: Kevin lost both his legs below-the-knee, his left hand, and the fingers on his right hand.

Kevin found the strength to go on in Julie, and in focusing on their children and how they’d forever remember their father’s reaction to this profound hardship. He had to learn to do everything again: shower, dress himself, walk, drive, and take care of his children. With focus, hard work, and custom-designed upper and lower extremity prosthetic devices from his Michigan Hanger Clinic team, including his prosthetists Tom Welsman and Ryan Sheridan, Kevin achieved all that and more. Less than a year after losing his limbs, he was even back on the water doing one of the things he loves most—wakesurfing.
