Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 20, 2018 – In June 2015, then 24-year-old Nicole Grehn collapsed unexpectedly in a gas station in a small town in Wisconsin. Her heart stopped 78 times before doctors induced her into a coma, and ultimately had to amputate both her legs to save her life. The otherwise healthy, active Grehn was faced with learning how to navigate life as a bilateral above-knee amputee.
In 2016, Grehn had a breakthrough when she attended her first Hanger Clinic Bilateral Above-Knee Amputee Bootcamp, an event tailored to those with her amputation level. She was so inspired by the people she met there, that she became determined to walk again independently with prosthetic legs, and to pursue a career in nursing.
Now, just a few short years later, Grehn is a registered nurse serving in the orthopedic trauma unit at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, the same hospital in Milwaukee where medical professionals saved her life. She is also a full-time prosthetics user, walking on two microprocessor-controlled prosthetic legs thanks to hard work, determination, and care from her Hanger Clinic team, including Milwaukee-based clinic manager Tom Current, CPO.
NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt covered Grehn’s journey for their “Those Who Serve” segment. Watch the full story here: https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/woman-inspired-to-become-a-nurse-after-losing-both-legs-1375267395717?v=raila&.
