LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Feb. 20, 2019 – For the second year, Hanger, Inc.’s 2019 Education Fair featured a full day of keynote sessions focused on patient care and clinical outcomes, delivered by physicians, scientists, and therapists from major medical institutions across the U.S.

“The sessions offered attendees a unique opportunity to hear from some of the most highly regarded medical professionals in fields related to O&P, from rehabilitation to biomechanical engineering,” stated Jim Campbell, PhD, Hanger’s Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. “This collaborative approach is designed to provide Hanger Clinic orthotists and prosthetists with access to the leading minds revolutionizing patient-centered, data-driven care.”

The keynote sessions, held Feb. 19, opened with presentations from experts on clinical outcomes measurement and utilization within specific focus areas, including lower limb prosthetics (Brian Hafner, PhD, University of Washington); upper limb prosthetics (Linda Resnik, PT, PhD, FAPTA, Providence VA and Brown University); and pediatric patients with cerebral palsy (Unni G. Narayanan, MBBS, MSc, FRCSC, the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto).

The sessions continued with talks on advances that are moving the field of O&P into the future, including telemedicine applications in amputation care, presented by Billie J. Randolph, PT, PhD (Colonel, U.S. Army Retired), Deputy Director of the Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence. Gregory Dumanian, MD, Chief of Plastic Surgery at Northwestern University, discussed pain mitigation through targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), a peripheral nerve procedure he developed and refined over the last 15 years. Ronald Triolo, PhD, Executive Director of the VA’s Center for Advanced Platform Technology, presented on neurally-integrated assistive technology, specifically prostheses that restore motor and sensory function after paralysis or limb loss.

Leaders from Hanger Clinic’s Department of Clinical and Scientific Affairs also presented on innovations that Hanger is spearheading, including a lower limb prosthetic activity tracker developed in partnership with AT&T, and the next phases of Hanger Clinic’s landmark Mobility Analysis of Amputees (MAAT) studies.
