Washington, D.C., Feb. 12, 2019 – In celebration of Valentine’s Day, NBC’s TODAY Third Hour featured the extraordinary love story of Amanda Flores Bordoy and her husband Frank. Since meeting in 2013, the couple have faced and overcome unsurmountable odds to stand face to face at the altar and say their wedding vows.
Soon after meeting, Amanda and Frank fell in love and began planning their future together. But in late 2014, their lives changed dramatically: Amanda contracted strep throat, which would turn into life-threatening septic shock. To save her life, both her legs were amputated above-the-knee and her arms below-the-elbow. Frank spent many nights in the hospital, never leaving Amanda’s side, and later proposed. Amanda said yes, but on one condition – they wouldn’t marry until she could walk down the aisle independently using prosthetic legs.
Amanda knew her dreams were within reach when she attended Hanger Clinic’s Bilateral Above-Knee Amputee Bootcamp in April 2017. There, she was surrounded by fellow double above-knee amputees who were full-time prosthetic users, and clinical experts who were committed to helping her achieve her goals. In the months that followed, in collaboration with peer mentors and her Hanger Clinic prosthetic team, including Bethesda, Md.-based Area Clinic Manager Mike Muratore, National Upper Extremity Specialist Brian Monroe, and Vice President of Prosthetics Kevin Carroll, Amanda worked incredibly hard to regain her mobility and independence.
Last August, Amanda walked independently down the aisle to meet her groom, where the two exchanged vows and started the next chapter of their love story.
