Los Angeles, Feb. 21, 2020 – Last Thursday, Hanger was featured on the popular show Jeopardy when a clue referenced the company’s founder, J.E. Hanger, as the first amputee of the Civil War and inventor of a new type of prosthetic leg. A clip of the segment is available here.
In 1861 as an 18-year-old engineering student, J.E. Hanger left school and his family to join his brothers in the Civil War. Less than two days after enlisting, a cannonball tore through his leg early in the Battle of Philippi, making him the first documented amputee of the war. After months of working on what would prove to be a revolutionizing prosthetic solution, the “Hanger Limb” was first worn by Hanger in November 1861.
