AUSTIN, Texas – Feb. 9, 2021 – This year, Hanger’s annual education conference featured two keynote sessions with Indra Nooyi, former PepsiCo Chairman and CEO, one of the world’s most powerful women and successful CEOs. In conversation with Hanger President and CEO Vinit Asar, Nooyi shared her personal journey, from founding a college women’s cricket team in India to leading PepsiCo, and insights about leading with purpose, and why diversity and inclusion are critical to the success of any business.
The theme of Hanger LIVE 2021 was “Powered by Purpose,” which closely mirrors Nooyi’s 12-year tenure as PepsiCo’s CEO, when she transformed the company by adapting and acting on the mantra, “Performance with Purpose.”
“We wanted to create an environment where the best and brightest would come to PepsiCo because we allowed their whole selves to come to work,” Nooyi said. As PepsiCo began the transformational process of becoming a purpose-driven company, Nooyi asked, “What if we were to rethink the company and say, ‘Beyond performance as our only goal, we’re also going to commit to a deep sense of purpose’? We could feel proud about coming to work for PepsiCo because we were actually going to make a difference to society in profound ways.”
“I don’t think there could be a better example of how to bring a purpose to life than Indra’s story of shifting PepsiCo’s direction,” said Asar. “At Hanger, our purpose of ‘Empowering Human Potential Together’ guides our 4,900 employees as they provide essential care, products, and services that restore patients’ mobility and improve their quality of life. Hearing from Indra was an energizing reminder that purpose matters.”
Throughout her career, Nooyi has broken boundaries and been a champion for women in the workplace. She spoke to Asar about bias and the need for diversity and inclusion programs, an area where Hanger has been concentrating efforts for several years.
