ATLANTA – June 22, 2023 – From June 8-10, 40 people living with above-knee limb loss or limb difference gathered in Atlanta for Hanger Clinic’s Bilateral Above-Knee Amputee (BAKA) Bootcamp. The event, which started in Oklahoma City more than a decade ago and now travels around the country, helps teach critical mobility skills for navigating the world on prosthetic legs.

This was the first BAKA Bootcamp ever held in Atlanta, with healthcare professionals and Hanger Clinic employees attending to support the participants, who hailed from as far away as Colombia and marked the largest group ever to attend a BAKA Bootcamp.

A critical part of the event was real-world mobility training, which was held June 9 at Truist Park, the home of the Atlanta Braves. The iconic ballpark features ramps, stairs, and elevators, so participants had a variety of natural obstacles to conquer as they began at the top of the ballpark and made their way down to the third-base dugout.

Local Atlanta news stations attended the mobility training, interviewing attendees and Hanger Clinic employees about what it means to be part of an event that has a lasting impact on the amputee community. Watch some of the stories below:

Hanger Clinic’s next BAKA Bootcamp event will be held later this year in Kansas City, Missouri, from October 5-7.
